William Hornbeck

William Hornbeck was born Barbour County, Virginia on March 21, 1835. He was a farmer by trade. He enlisted in Battery E, 1st West Virginia Artillery on August 14, 1862 in Buckhannon, West Virginia (then Virginia) and was mustered in on September 13, 1862 as a Private. He was 6'2" with dark complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. During his service, he partipated in the following engagements: Buckhannon, Mechanicsburg Gap, Snickers Gap, and Winchester. He was mustered out of service on June 28, 1865 at Wheeling, West Virginia.

William and his wife, Francis, had 12 children, but only two lived to adulthood. William Hornbeck died in Lewis County, West Virginia and is buried on Jesses Run near Jane Lew, West Virginia (Directions: Take exit 105 off of I-79 at Jane Lew in West Virginia, go East on the small road toward a truck stop. At this truck stop, there is a side road labeled "Jesses Run Road." Go 3.4 miles out the Jesse Run Road. On the left side of the road, on a wooded bank, there is a small gravel driveway going up the hill. About 30 yards up this hill is a small cemetery containing roughly 100 tombstones. A church once stood at the front of the cemetery. Chips of slate still can found from the old slate roof).
