Jonah Bayles

Jonah Bayles enlisted as a Private July 3, 1861 into Company E, 7th Regiment West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. He participated in the battles of Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Morton's ford, Wilderness, Po River, Ny River, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Totopotomy, Cold Harbor, Deep Bottom, Reams' station, and portion of the siege of Petersburg. During his enlistment, he was wounded three times... twice grazed by a bullet and one major wound through the leg at Antietam. Also during his enlistment, he was transferred from Company E to Company A. He was honorably discharged on August 10, 1864.

Following the war, Jonah Baykle joined the Hoffman Post #62, Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), in Morgantown, West Virginia. Following his death, his obituary read:... word was received here by relatives of the passing of the oldest member of Morgantown's (WV) dwindling company of the G.A.R. Always active in public affairs, Mr. Bayles was an active member of the G.A.R. and made it a point of honor never to miss an election.
