Derrick Dean Banta

Private Derrick Dean Banta enlisted at the age of 18 in Company F of the 76th Illinois Volunteer Infantry August 1862. The 76th Illinois saw most of its action near the Mississippi River. He fought on the far left of the Federal siege lines at the surrender of Vicksburg. He was mustered out March of 1865. His son, Thayne Labanta (the La was added to Banta in 1877) of Jackson, Michigan was a member of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a Past Department Commander of Michigan, and a True Son, who just passed away in 2000 at the age of 95.
