Charles Birnbaum

Charles Birnbaum was born in Ohio. He was a resident of Eddyville, Iowa when the war began and he enlisted from Wapello County in Company D, 36th Iowa Infantry on August 8, 1862. He was commissioned as a as 2nd Lieutenant on September 4, 1862. He was 28 years old. He was listed as a Prisoner of War on April 25, 1862 following the battle of Marke's Mills, Arkansas. He was promoted to Captain on December 20, 1864. He was mustered out of service on August 24, 1865. After the war, he returned to Wapello County, Iowa where he remained for several years. He later moved to Hot Springs Arkansas. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic. Photograph and information submitted by Stephen Burgess, of Rogers, Arkansas.
