James Sippi Johnson

Born in Carter County, Kentucky in October 1833. He was the son of Jesse Johnson Sr. and Polly Boggs. He enlisted at Grayson, Kentucky as a Private on August 20, 1863 in Company D, 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry. He mustered out Company D, 40th Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Infantry on December 30, 1864 in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. The 40th Kentucky saw action at the Battles of Cynthiana, Kentucky, Saltville, Virginia, and several skirmishes in eastern Kentucky and western Virginia. Four of his brothers were Confederate soldiers who belonged to the very Confederate cavalry units that James Johnson and the 40th Kentucky Mounted Infantry fought and chased throughout eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia. This was a true example of brother against brother, which was quite common in the eastern Kentucky mountains during the War. James moved to Sauk County, Wisconsin in the 1880s due in part supposedly because of his split from the family during the Civil War. He died in 1909 and is buried at the Lime Ridge Cemetery near Ironton in Sauk County, Wisconsin.
