Charles H. E. Moran
Charles Henry Edward Moran, Jr. was born on April 30, 1889 in Rensselaer, New York. In 1906, he moved to Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Joining the Gen. George B. McClellan, Camp 60 on October 18, 1906, he served in the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War for close to 55 years. He served every position in his local Camp and served in many Department and National positions including the Department Commander (1926-1927) for Massachusetts and Commander of the New England Regional Association (1951). Prior to becoming Commander-in-Chief, he had served two terms on the Council of Administration.
His grandfather, Thomas Moran, was with the Federal Naval forces aboard the Battleship SS Potomac during the Civil War. His father Charles, saw service in the Spanish-American War and was the SUVCW Department Commander of New York (1900-1901).
In 1910, Charles was named to the Memorial Day Exercises Committee and in 1914 was chosen as its chairman. In 1950, he was awarded the VFW Good Citizenship Medal for his 36-year record as chairman of the committee. He resigned two years later.
Starting in 1909, he joined the Boston and Maine Railroad as a clerk at the local freight depot and several years later became Chief Clerk, a position he held until his retirement in 1959.
Charles was involved with the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight in 1936. He served for 20 years as the Council's treasurer.
He married Laura M. Horrigan on August 14, 1912 and they had two sons and a daughter.
Brother Moran died on January 26, 1962 at the Elm Manor Nursing Home of Chicopee, Massachusetts. He is buried in St. Jerome Cemetery in Holyoke.
