Harold E Arnold

1959/1960

Brother Arnold was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War at the 78th National Encampment held in Long Beach, Cal. on August 19, 1959. His great grandfather, Dennis H. Arnold served with Company L, 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. His father, Frederick J. Arnold joined the order at Rockland, RI and was a Past Department Commander and after 54 years was still active in his Camp.

Harold joined McGregor Camp No. 4 of West Warwick in 1927 and was active throughout his lifetime. He served as Camp Commander, Department Commander, as a member of the Council of Administration in 1951 and 1952, served as Commander of the New England Regional Association, served as Jr. Vice Commander-in-Chief in 1957, and Sr. Vice Commander-in-Chief in 1958.

During WWII, he served in the European Theater of Operations with Battery D, 67th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion as a range section anti-aircraft operator in Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was awarded the
European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the WWII Victory Medal.

Born on May 6, 1912, he was educated in Rhode Island and resided there continuously. He was a charter member of the local Lions Club. Commander Arnold was employed by the State of Rhode Island as a Forest Ranger and held that position for seventeen years. He married Grace A. Winsor and had one son, Dennis.

He died on June 19, 1975 and is buried in Albert Winsor Lot, Smithfield. Rhode Island.
