Frank J. Kirchgassner
Frank Leopold Kirchgassner was born on April 9, 1876 in Boston, Massachusetts. He lived in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts for 50 years.
His father, Leopold, was in Co. G, 9th New Jersey Infantry. He was a Comrade in the Frederick Hecker Post 21, Boston which was mainly composed of veterans of German decent.
Frank originally joined the Frederick Hecker Camp No. 145, Roxbury, Massachusetts on April 26, 1893 and served as a Camp Commander. He became a charter member of the Joseph Stedman Camp No. 51, Jamaica Plain joining on May 3, 1905. He joined the Col. Thomas W. Higginson Camp No. 56, Cambridge, Massachusetts on December 2, 1908. He was the Division Commander for Massachusetts in 1912.
At the 1932 National Encampment, Frank was elected Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief. At the 1934 National Encampment, three Brothers were nominated for Commander-in-Chief. Kirchgassner received 63 votes, Richard F. Locke (IL) had 43, and William A. Dyer (NY) had 37. A second
ballot was needed and Kirchgassner received 83 votes, Locke had 34, and Dyer had 24. A motion was made to declare the election unanimous, it was seconded, and passed. At the 1942 National Encampment, he was appointed National Counselor.
He was one of the original organizers of the Massachusetts Sons of Union Veterans Old Timers' Association, served as President of the Massachusetts Department Past Commanders' Association, and was President of the North Metropolitan District Association, Sons of Union Veterans, which was comprised of 14 area Camps. In 1907, he was President of the Trolley Club, Sons of Veterans.
Frank was in the National and Massachusetts Guards for nine years.
He was the Chief Printer at the Ginn & Co. for 48 years.
Frank was a member of the New England Lodge No. 4 I.O.O.F., the Maj. Gen. Edwards Post No. 2 United American Veterans, Eliot Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and the Central Club of Jamaica Plain.
He married Willhilmena L. Kern and they had no children.
Brother Kirchgassner died at his home on June 9, 1946 in Jamaica Plain and is buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Jamacia Plain.
Note: The Col. Thomas W. Higginson Camp No. 56 and the Henry Noble Couden Camp No. 61 combined to form the Couden-Higginson Camp No. 56 on April 2, 1937. Brother Kirchgassner remained in this Camp.
