A.E.B. Stephens

Ambrose Everett Burnside Stephens was born on June 3, 1862 in Crosby, Ohio. The people who knew him called him Buzz. He lived in Cleves, Miami, North Bend, and Cincinnati, Ohio.

His father, Samuel Kyle, joined Co. G, 7th Indiana Volunteer Infantry on April 25, 1861 and he mustered out on August 2, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant.

A.E.B  joined the Sons of Veterans about 1886. He was on the Ohio Division Council in 1890, Ohio's Division Commander in 1899, and appointed National Counselor in 1906.

He served as Captain and Quartermaster (1901-1903) and Colonel (1910-1911) of the First Regiment, Ohio National Guard.

After being educated at the Chickering Institute in Cincinnati, he was appointed a Deputy County Treasurer and later transferred his activities to the County Clerk's Office. In 1910 he was elected County Clerk and served three terms. While in these offices he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1902. When his terms ended, he practiced law until 1918 when he was elected to his first of five terms in Congress representing the Second Ohio District. He died before his fifth term was to start.

On April 6, 1891, he was elected for two year term as Mayor of Cleves. He was also a Internal Revenue Stamp Agent of Cincinnati and President of the Miami Township B. and L. Company.

A.E.B. married Mary Carlin and they had three daughters and one son. After the death of Mary, he married Margaret Patterson, who became National President of the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in 1922.

Brother Stephens died on February 12, 1927 in North Bend and is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery in Cleves.
