Chester S. Shriver
Chester S. Shriver was initiated into Gettysburg Camp #112 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1947. He eligibility was derived from his Great Grandfather, Lewis P. Shriver, who serve in Company B, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry. He served as Camp Commander of Gettysburg Camp #112, Pennsylvania Department Commander in 1956 and Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief in 1961. He was elected Commander-in-Chief by National Council of Administration following death of Commander-in-Chief Charles L. Messer on May 3, 1962. He was then elected Commander-in-Chief in 1962 at the 81st National Encampment in Washington, DC. He enlisted in the Sons of Veterans Reserve in 1952 and served as it Commander from 1967 to 1989.
Chester Shriver was born in 1924 in Adams County, Pennsylvania and attended Gettysburg High School. He worked as and Insurance Representative for Home Mutual Life Insurance Company. He was active with the Gettysburg Memorial Day and Veterans Day Committees, Gettysburg College Advisory Committee, Commission, Adams County Civil War Centennial, and President of the Lincoln Fellowship for seven years. He served in the State Guard from 1940 to 1948 and the National Guard from 1948 to 1954. He was a 32nd Mason, Knight Templar, Shriner.
He also was a member of the Mount Joy Lutheran Church, Amvets Post #172, B.P.O.E. Lodge 1045 and the Fish and Game Association, Barlow Fire Company, and County and State Volunteer Fireman's Association He died July 26, 1989 at the age of 65 years and a 42 year SUVCW Member. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He was Life Member #17.
