Lawson Monroe Bess

Lawson Monroe Bess served in the Missouri State Guards, Missouri State Militia (US), was captured and enlisted or conscripted into the Missouri Infantry (CSA), escaped with his cousins at the battle of Iuka, and returned to serve in the Missouri State Militia (US). His military history is as follows:

  • 1861 - Private, Missouri State Guard, 2nd Regiment Infantry, Thompson Brigade, engaged at Lucas Bend and Fort Pillow.
  • February 12, 1862 - 12th Regiment Cavalry, Company C, Missouri State Militia
  • March 15, 1862 - Letter to Provost Marshall from Bess and others asking for protection from guerillas.
  • March 15, 1862 - Captured while furloughed
  • April 11, 1862 - Joined the 5th Missouri Regiment Infantry (CSA), Company K
  • September 19, 1862 - Deserted from CSA. Historic roll from that company stated, Went to the yankees, is a yank and always was.
  • October 14, 1862 - Provost Marshal's office lists L.M.Bess as a Prisoner of War captured at Iuka.
  • February 2, 1963 - Transferred to 5th Regiment Cavalry (new), Missouri State Militia
