James K. Polk Salisbury

James K. Polk Salisbury was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in 1846. He lied his age and enlisted on July 4, 1861 and turned 15 a little over 3 weeks later. He was mustered as a Private into Company B, 7th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry on July 4, 1861. He was briefly considered a deserter in 1863 but was returned to duty. On May 25, 1864, he wounded (shot in the hand) at North Anna River during the Wilderness campaign. On February 1, 1865, he was transferred into the Veterans Reserve Corps. He was mustered out of service on July 25, 1865, just days prior to his 19th birthday. The 1880s found him in North Dakota where he became a founding member of the J.J. Crittenden Grand Army of the Republic Post #33 in Minnewaukan, North Dakota. He died in 1906 and was buried in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Information and photograph submitted by James K.
