John Gordon
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
John A. Gordon John A. Gordon served from 1862 to 1864 in the 83rd Illinois and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was appointed a Lieutenant in the 16th U.S. Colored Troops in 1864, and was discharged as a Major in 1866.
Later he served eight years as head of the English Deparment at Monmouth College, Illinois. He was later involved in the Ministry and in teaching in Occidental College, Los Angeles, and in 1907, he was President of the Bible League in California.
