John Clarence Mummert

John Clarence Mummert enlisted as a Private in Company I, 6th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry at Alliance, Ohio on January 24, 1864. He fought at the battles of the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and Weldon Railroad. His records show that for at least four months he was listed as sick and in the hospital. John Mummert was present at Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, April 9, 1865. He was mustered out of service at Petersburg, Virginia on August 7, 1865. John Mummert died in 1896 at the age of 50. At the time of death, he was receiving a pension of $8.00 a month from the government. He was a member of the Josiah Andrews Post #51, Grand Army of the Republic located in Alanson, Michigan.
