John Cox Clower

John Cox Clower was born August 18, 1844, in Franklin Township, Warren County, Ohio, and died February 1, 1915, northwest of Chanute, Kansas. He served in the Illinois 73rd Volunteer Infantry, Company I, enlisting as a Private, August 14, 1862 and discharged June 16, 1865. He was severely wounded in the battle at Resaca, Georgia, where in a firefight, the man in front of him was hit and fell. John picked up the fallen man's weapon, fired one shot, reloaded, fired a second shot, and was kneeling down reloading for a third shot when he was wounded. The bullet that hit him passed through his left cheek and out behind the right ear, angling just in front of his brain. This injury left him blind in the left eye and deaf in his right ear. He suffered from excruciating headaches the rest of his life. After he was wounded, he was mistaken for dead and was put on a wagon with corpses, where he regained consciousness. Photograph and information submitted by John Cox Clower's great great granddaughter, Jo Rice.
