Heman L. Hobart

Heman L. Hobart, farmer and stock raiser, section 20, was born in Licking County, Ohio, February 20, 1842. He was 5 feet 8 inches in height, of light complexion with brown eyes and brown hair. His father was Giles Hobart, a native of Vermont and a farmer by occupation. His mother’s maiden name was Mary Warden of New Hampshire. Heman was educated in the common schools of Ohio, and lived on a farm until he was twenty years old. August 12, 1862, he enlisted in Company D, 113th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged July 6, 1865, having taken part in the battles of Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, and the siege of Atlanta, and with Sherman on his march to the sea. He was wounded at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 23, 1863 and hospitalized in Louisville, Kentucky.

After the war he returned to Ohio, where he farmed until 1869, then coming to Cass County, Missouri. He bought 400 acres of land and improved it, and owned one of the best stock yards in the township. He embarked in the sheep business extensively in 1873, and had about 400 head, and also other stock. Mr. Hobart was married to Miss Emma Stevens, a native of Ohio, February 15, 1867. They had six children: Alice, Martha, Clara, Grace, Emela and Lewis. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church.” Heman and Emma moved from Granville to a farm 7 miles west of Garden City Missouri (near Austin, Missouri) in 1869. He lived there until 1895 when they moved to Garden City, Missouri. Later they moved to Parsons Kansas where Emma and his mother passed away. Later he moved to Webster Groves, Missouri where he married Mrs. Florence M. Fish who survived him. For years he was a member of Stambaugh Post No. 180, Grand Army of the Republic in Austin, Missouri, later of Ransom Post No. 131 of St. Louis.

His funeral was held from the M.E. Church in Garden City, at two o’clock on a Wednesday afternoon and burial took place in the Garden City cemetery with Funeral Director L.M. Kauffman in charge. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. D.W. Britton, of Carthage, Missouri; a former pastor of the Garden City church.

Obituary: “Heman L. Hobart was born in Grantsville, Ohio, February 20, 1842. Passed away at his home in Webster Groves, near St. Louis, Missouri., on November 29, 1925. Aged 83 years, 9 months and 9 days. He was married to Emma E. Stevens in Grantsville, Ohio, March 4th, 1867. To this union six children were born. The wife and mother passed away November 17, 1912 at Parsons, Kansas. Two daughters preceded his passing: Martha A., September 5, 1904, at the home in Garden City; Alice A. Smith, June 19, 1924 near Livingston, Montana. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Florence Fish Hobart, Webster Groves, Mo., and four children; Mrs. Clara McCulloh, Boulder, Colorado; Mrs. Grace Geyer, Pueblo, Colorado; Mrs. Emily Bell, Fort Smith Arkansas, and Lewis A. Hobart, Webster Groves, Missouri".
