George R. Bell

George R. Bell was born in 1840. When the war broke out, he was a resident of Chicago Illinios. On June 9, 1862, he enlisted at Chicago into Company G, 37th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry as a 1st Lieutenant. The 37th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, known as Fremont Rifles, was organized by Colonel Julius White in August 1861 and was mustered into service September 18, 1861. On August 14, 1862, Lieutenant Bell was promoted to Captain. Captain Bell was one of several officers of the 37th wounded at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, December 7, 1862.
