Colonel Garrett L. Nevius

Prior to the Civil War, Garrett L. Nevius was a partner in a photography shop in his hometown, Rockford, Illinois. With the advent of war, he was commissioned as a Captain on April 30, 1861 and assumed command of Company D of the 11th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on May 14, 1861. He mustered out on July 30, 1861 and on the same date was commissioned as a Major into Field and Staff of 11th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was subsequently promoted to Lt. Colonel on February 15, 1862 and later Colonel on March 16, 1863 in the same regiment. He was killed at Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 22, 1863. The Grand Army of the Republic G.L Nevius Post #1 in Rockford, Illinois was named for him after the war. Colonel Nevius never married and had no children.
