Galusha Turner

Galusha Turner was born on November 1, 1837 in Monroe County, Michigan to Winthrop and Lucy (nee Warren) Turner. At 5 years old, his family travelled up to near Ingersoll, Ontario. When his father died in 1855, his mother and her two sons traveled back to Michigan settling in Hillsdale, where a lot of Lucy's family was residing. On August 4, 1862, Galusha and his brother, Daniel, enlisted in the 18th Michigan Volunteer Infantry although they were placed in different companies with Galusha being assigned to Company D and Daniel to Company G. On August 23, 1862, he married Anna C. Nares who was originally from New York and had a brother who fought as a Lieutenant in the Union Army.  On August 26, 1862, he was mustered into Federal service. In 1863, he was transferred to the Regiment's Teamsters, where he spent the rest of the war. According to his pension record, a tree limb fell on him while on a scout sometime in 1863. On June 26, 1865, he was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee. After the war, he lived in several different places in Michigan. Galusha and his wife had 4 children, Charles Winthrop, Lucy Mae, Harry Judson, and Edwin Alvin. Unfortunately, only Harry and Edwin survived to adulthood. On December 9, 1879, Galusha put in for a Veteran's Pension based on injuries sustained while in the army and eventually receive one. In 1886, he joined the Sedgwick Grand Army of the Republic Post #16 in Evart, Michigan.  In 1901, Galusha and Anna moved to Leamington, Ontario, Canada. where their son Harry was living, and were set up with a house on Orange Street by Harry. Galusha Turner died of a stroke on June 11, 1909. After Galusha died, his widow, Anna applied for a widow's pension, which she received. Anna C. Turner died of pneumonia January 13, 1929. Both are buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Leamington, Ontario, Canada.  Photograph and information submitted by Galusha Turner's great-great-great grandson, Adam Gaines.
