Frederick Wiffin

Frederick Wiffin was born in England on July 3, 1843 and moved to Boone County, Illinois in 1859. He enlisted in the Union army on August 30, 1861 in Company I, 37th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry (also known as the Illinois Greyhounds.) He was promoted to Sergeant and re-enlisted to serve in Company K. The 37th Illinois took part in the Battles of Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, and Vicksburg. He returned to Boone County after the war and lived in Belvidere for the rest of his life, where he was a proud member of Hurlbut Grand Army of the Republic Post #164. He died June 6, 1908 and is buried in Belvidere Cemetery. Photograph and information submitted by Frederick Wiffin's great-great-granddaughter, Lori Johnson.
