David W. Avery

David W. Avery was born August 1, 1836, in New York. At age 27, he enlisted and was mustered on December 31, 1863 at Owego, New York as Principal Musician into the Field and Staff of the 109th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry. On May 31, 1865, he transferred into 51st Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry and on June 3, 1865 enlisted as Principal Musician and was transferred into Field and Staff of the 51st Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry. He was honorably discharged on July 25, 1865 in New York, New York.

He came to Nevada in the middle of the 1870s and worked as a guard in the State Prison in or near Carson City. He retired as a Captain in 1908. He was the Post Commander of the General Custer Post No.5, Grand Army of the Republic, in Carson City from 1907 - 1909 and then again from 1914 - 1915. He was Post Commander at the time of his death on March 16, 1915. He is buried in the Grand Army of the Republic section in The Lone Mountain Cemetery in Carson City, Nevada.
