Charles F. Sherman

1914-1915

Charles Fayerweather Sherman was born on September 4, 1872 in Redding, Connecticut. He would  move to New York in the late-1890s and moved to Trumbull, Connecticut for his final 18 years.

His father, George, served with Co. K, 11th Connecticut Infantry. He then enlisted with Co. B, 13th Connecticut Infantry and was severely wounded at the siege of Petersburgh, Virginia. After recovering and with the war over, he served nine months on Provost Marshall duty in the mountains of eastern Tennessee and southwest Virginia. He was a Comrade in the Moore-White Post No. 18, Danbury, Connecticut.

Charles joined the William H. Mallory Camp No. 11, Bridgeport,
Connecticut around 1890. After his move to New York, he became a member of the Charles J. Nordquist Camp No. 64, Mount Vernon. He was elected New York's Department Commander in 1908. In 1910, he was elected Council-in-Chief. He was appointed National Patriotic Instructor in 1912 and 1913.

Early in life he worked at a grocery store. He was the owner of a Sherman's Business School in Mt. Vernon.

Charles was a Scottish Rite 32nd degree Mason and a member of Hiawatha Lodge 434, Bethlehem Commandery Knights Templar, Mt. Vernon Rotary Club, Golden Rod Council, and Royal Arcanum.

He married Susie Elliot and they had a son and daughter. After her death in 1920, me married Georgiana Thorpe.

Brother Sherman died on June 14, 1967 in Bridgeport, Connecticut and is buried at Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport.
