Allen W. Moore was elected and installed August 14, 1993 as Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) at the 112th National Encampment held in Portland, Maine.

A native of Anderson, Indiana, Commander-in-Chief Moore was educated in the public schools of that city and graduated from Anderson High School. He attended Anderson University for two years on a scholastic scholarship, and then transferred to Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He received his bachelor's degree from Ball State in business education and English, and a master's degree in business education. At Ball State he also completed one year of post-graduate work.

For 40 years Brother Moore taught business education and English in the high schools of Goshen, Kokomo and Indianapolis in his home state of Indiana, and for 17 years served as Chair of the Business Education Department. For more than 30 years he also taught in the adult education program in night school. In the Kokomo community, he has served as President of the Kokomo Community Concert Association, as well as a member of its Board of Directors. He completed a three-year term as Secretary of the Board of Elders of the First Church of God of Kokomo. He has taught a Sunday school class, served as church pianist, and written the history of the church.

Commander-in-Chief Moore traces his eligibility for the SUVCW to Private Cornelius F. Whitehouse, Company B., 15th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, who is his great-great grandfather. Whitehouse enlisted at the age of 31, leaving behind a wife and three young children. After serving about 18 months of a three-year enlistment, Whitehouse was discharged because of disability - he had contracted typhoid fever in a march between Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee. His younger brother, Harrison J. Whitehouse, enlisted with him in the same regiment.

Brother Moore's involvement in the Order began in June 1981 when he became a member at the Indiana Department Encampment in Indianapolis. He served as Commander of the Ben Harrison Camp No. 356, at Indianapolis for two years and has been Camp Secretary-Treasurer for six years. In 1982, he reorganized the Orlando A. Somers Camp No. 1 at Kokomo, and served as its Commander for five years. He is a life member of SUVCW. On the state level, he has served as Department Commander for two years and as Department Senior Vice Commander, Junior Vice Commander, Council Member, and Counselor.

Prior to becoming Commander-in-Chief in August 1993, he served the National Organization as Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief and Junior Vice Commander-inChief. He also served as Chair of the National Committees on Membership, Fraternal Relations, and Program and Policies. Additional National Committees which he served as a member include Constitution and Regulations, Grand Army of the Republic Records, 125th Anniversary Events, and Encampment Credentials.

Commander-in-Chief Moore has been married to the former Barbara E. Tiley of Clarion, Pennsylvania for 41 years. The Moores have four daughters and five grandchildren. His wife, Barbara, and three of his daughters are members of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Barbara is also a member of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic. All four of the Commander-in-Chief's sons-in-law are members of SUVCW.

He is a life member of Delta Pi Epsilon, national honorary fraternity in graduate business education, and is a past President of the Pi Chapter. Other fraternal and hereditary organizations to which Commander-in-Chief Moore belongs include Sons of the American Revolution, Society of the War of 1812, Huguenot Society of Indiana, Society of Colonial Wars, Order of Descendants of Colonial Physicians and Chirurgiens, and Society of Indiana Pioneers.

Additional interests of Brother Moore include music, genealogy, photography, travel, and collecting Civil War images.
