It is with deep regret that Passmore Carlin Camp 25, Department of California and Pacific has reported the passing of Real Son Walter Edward Roode at age 99. Brother Roode passed away on Saturday January 19, 2013 at 10:00 A.M.  He was born in Belchertown, MA on June 8, 1913 the son of Stephen Washington Roode and Mary (Peereboom) Roode. His father served with Co. K, 9th Vermont Infantry and was captured, paroled, and reenlisted with Co. B, 2nd Battalion, 17th U. S. Infantry. He fought for the Union in the Battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, and Petersburg, among others. Walter's sister and Real Daughter Montiel Helen (Roode) McAuley, age 97, resides in Massachusetts.

Brother Roode is also survived by a daughter, Bonnie Sechrist of Pennsylvania, step-daughter Kathy Swartz, and his caregiver daughter-in-law Janie McBride. He has many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Walter was a WWII veteran and Past Post Commander of the American Legion.

I am requesting that all membership badges, Camp and Department charters and the National website be draped in black until 28 February 2013 in remembrance of Real Son Walter Edward Roode.
