    1. As Camps and Departments make plans to honor our Civil War ancestors this Memorial Day weekend, let us also reflect on the freedom we continue to enjoy by those military veterans that have gone after them. Our freedom is not free. It has been earned by thousands of Americans who have sacrificed their blood and lives for this great country.

    2. On battlefields, at Yorktown, The Alamo, Gettysburg, and San Juan Hill, those who came before us gave their all to ensure our freedom.

    3. In our time, the same sacrifice was made by those of “the Greatest Generation” at places like Normandy and Iwo Jima, and by those who followed at Pork Chop Hill, Vietnam, and those currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    4. As much as we wish it weren’t true, threats to our freedom will never go away. Our freedom and way of life will always be challenged. Each generation of Americans, since its birth, has had to face the battle of defending this country’s freedom. Our freedom was earned through a terrible price; a price that Americans have always been willing to pay. We all can be proud that each generation answered the call to defend our freedom.

    5. “Thanksgiving is a day we pause to give thanks for the things we have; Memorial Day is the day we pause to give thanks to the people who fought for the things we have.”
