Certificates from GAR post commanders stating that a soldier,
sailor, or marine veteran had died without funds to pay for a burial and
payment orders sent to the State Treasurer authorizing that $25 be expended
for burial expenses. Most, if not all, are Civil War veterans. The certificates show the GAR Post name,
number and location, date of certificate, post commander's name; name of
deceased veteran, death date, war served, unit served; name of GAR Department
Commander, his signature, and date and place of signature. The payment orders
show place of GAR headquarters, date, name of Department Commander, name and
place of residence of deceased veteran, signature of Department Commander,
name of State Treasurer, and name of cashier, bank and location to whom
payment should be made. There is one folder of Treasurer’s Warrants
authorizing the State Treasurer to pay for the burials. |
