William Harrison Dryden

Sergeant William Harrison Dryden was born April 12, 1840, in Adams County, Ohio. On June 14, 1861, William enlisted as a Private with Company E, 15th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was one of the first six soldiers in camp out of Morgan County, Indiana. He enlisted under Captain G. Lamb and Colonel George D. Wagoner. He was made Duty Sergeant. On July 1, 1863, he re-enlisted (his residence is Morgan County, Indiana). He mustered out June 25, 1864 in Montgomery, Indiana as a Sergeant. The 9th of August 1865, he married Mary Emily Thornburgh. They had five children, four growing to maturity. In the 1880 census, he is living in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana and his occupation is butcher. The Pension File dated December 4, 1884 in Morgan County, Indiana, he is declared invalid and that he was with Company E, 15th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry. The 1900 census noted that he was an insurance agent. Sergeant William H. Dryden died June 26, 1911, in Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana. He is buried in New South Park Cemetery, in Martinsville. The Civil War Pension File dated July 3, 1911, notes his wife as a widow. Both he and his wife were Methodists and he was a Mason.
