William Franklin "Frank" Hufford

William Franklin Hufford was born July 26, 1847 in Hocking County, Ohio. On October 29, 1862 (when he was 15 years old), he enlisted as a Private in Company G, 114th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On July 24, 1865, he was transferred to Company D, 48th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was honorably discharged on September 17, 1865, at Houston, Texas. By 1870, he was back in Ohio and teaching in Auglaize Township, Allen County.

In 1871, he married Ms. Harriet Adeline Johnston, the 18-year-old daughter of Samuel and Mary (Kelsey) Johnston. William and Harriet had three children: Emma O., born in 1873; Bertie, born about 1875; and Joseph J., born May 1882. Their daughter, Bertie, died before 1900.

William Franklin Hufford was an 1878 graduate of Ohio Northern University in Ada, Hardin, County, Ohio. He was a graduate of the Scientific course and a member of the University's Franklin Literary Society. He held the following degrees: A.M., M.Ped., M.S., and B.Ped. (A.M is Master of Arts, M.S. is Master of Science, and M.Ped. and B.Ped. are Masters and Bachelors in Pedagogy, teaching degrees, respectively). He was a faculty member at the University and served as Dean of the Normal Department from 1904 to 1909.

In 1910, William and his wife moved to Sawtelle, California, an area in west Los Angeles, where William taught in the public schools. William also served on the Draft Board in California during World War I. William Franklin Hufford died on September 6, 1924 in Los Angeles County, California.
