Chaplain Thomas Whitted

Thomas Allen Whitted was born in North Carolina on January 3, 1810, to John Wesley Whitted, Sr. and Ruth Lavina Allen. By 1860 he was living in Jackson Township, Morgan County, Indiana. He served as a chaplain in the 27th Indiana Infantry for two years and ultimately resigned due to poor health (chronic hepatitis). Upon his death in 1871, a “Tribute of Respect” was published by a committee of the Eminence Lodge, No. 317, I.O.O.F. that stated in part, “Resolved, That in his death the Fraternity has lost a valuable member and the community has lost a true christian. He was benevolent, courteous and kind, just in his intercourse with his fellow man, ever ready to whisper good council in the ear of an erring Brother. He was one well worthy our imitation.”
