George Byron Bennett

George Byron Bennett was born June 8, 1843 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. He was 18 when he enlisted and was mustered into Company F, 1st Rhode Island Cavalry on October 29, 1861. He became a prisoner of war on June 18, 1863 at Middleburg, Virginia (he was confined at Libby Prison and, later, Belle Isle). He was paroled on July 23, 1863 at City Point, Virginia and was transferred to Camp Parole in Annapolis, Maryland on July 24, 1863. After being reunited with his regiment, he was transferred from Company F to Company A and promoted to Sergeant. He was mustered out of service on August 3, 1865 at Baltimore, Maryland.
