"Frank" (Veteran of Company A, 12th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry)

Here is Frank, noted horse of the 12th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (OVC), Company A. When Frank died in 1886 at age 28, Wesley Grubb(1), Senior Vice Commander of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Leith Post #127 of Nevada, Ohio, wrote his obituary. It appeared on the front page of the September 17, 1886 Bucyrus Journal. The old soldiers took Frank's remains to the farm of Captain John H. Harter(2) and buried him there (Mr. Bill Stanley of Oceola, Ohio now owns Captain Harter's farm). A collection was taken up and a monument placed, complete with GAR flagholder. The concretion has now fallen off the top of the Leith monument, and the monument now leans backward.

Frank's soldier, Abraham Conger(3), is buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery near Worthington, Ohio. Captain Harter is buried in Oceola Cemetery 1, behind the service station. Wesley Grubb is buried in Nevada Cemetery. Abraham Conger's family still has his sword and picture of Frank, but no pictures of Abraham Conger.
