Edward J. Russell

Edward J. Russell was a member of the 19th Indiana, Company F, of John Gibbon's Iron Brigade. He was born in New York City to a physician. However, he ran away from home and moved to Indiana. Mr. Russell was mustered into service in Indianapolis in the summer of 1861. While with the Iron Brigade, he was wounded and captured while fighting the Stonewall Brigade in the Battle of Brawner's Farm (Second Manassas) on August 28, 1862. After being exchanged a week later, he returned to New York rather than Indiana. He recovered in government hospitals and served the remainder of the war in the 10th Veteran's Reserve Corps.

Mr. Russell moved to Washington D.C. in the 1870s, and worked as a proofreader in the Government Printing Office. He married his wife, Ellen Gould, in 1877 (a daughter of one of Edwin M. Stanton's War Department Clerks) and had one child, Hilda. Mr. Russell was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic's Meade Post in Washington D.C. He in 1896 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetary, Grave 11228 Section 13.
