Daniel Perry

Daniel Perry was born in 1845 or 1846, and he was a farmer around the Rose Hill area, on the border between Carter County and Lewis County, Kentucky. He was the son of William Eulett and Ellender Perry, but they did not get married until Daniel was 8 years old, so he was given his mother's surname of Perry.

He enlisted as a private in Company E of the 40th Regiment Kentucky Infantry at Grayson, Kentucky, on September 28, 1863. The 40th Kentucky fought in several battles in Kentucky and southwestern Virginia, including the Battles of Cynthiana, Paintsville, and Saltville. Daniel mustered out with his regiment on December 30, 1864. The war had taken its toll on Danie. By the early 1890's, he was on a disability pension of $6.00/month due to rheumatism and disease of the throat.

He died in 1893, and is buried in the Henderson Cemetery in Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky. He was married to Lydia Margaret Rose, daughter of John Henry Rose and Mahala Gulley. The Perry family came from Ireland, and illustrious cousins in the family tree include the author of "Gilliver's Travels", Jonathan Swift, and the writer of "The Star-Spangled Banner", Francis Scott Key.
