Charles Wesley 'Wes' Turman

Wes Turman was born in Virginia on November 20, 1836. He served in Company I of the 7th Iowa Cavalry, signing on at Sioux City on September 26, 1861. The Regiment was assigned duty in the Northeast, Dakota Territory, Missouri, Kansas and the Northwest. He was mustered out of the army in Sioux City on November 23, 1864 and traveled west to spent the next 40 years as a prospector, sheriff and scout. He returned to Smithland, Iowa in his late years and died there in 1910. He is buried with his brothers and parents in Smithland.
