Augustus Burger

Augustus Burger was born August 28, 1840 in Wortinburg, Germany. He was a cabinet maker by trade. August enlisted on July 10, 1861 and was mustered on August 28, 1861 at New York, New York as a Private into Company K, 55th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry. On October 1, 1862, he was transferred from Company K to Company B within the 55th New York. He was discharged for disability in 1863. On July 20, 1863, he enlisted and was mustered into 2nd Battery Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery. He was wounded March 10, 1865 at Southwest Creek, North Carolina. He was mustered out of service on June 17, 1865. Following the end of the Civil War, he joined the Gilman C. Parker Post #153 of the Grand Army of the Republic in Wicnchendon, Massachusetts. He died on February 27, 1908. He was buried in the Old Centre Cemetery in Winchendon, Massachusetts. Photographs and information submitted by Gail Noel.
