Allen McLane

Allen McLane was born January 31, 1835 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He initially enlisted on April 23, 1861 as a Private in Company E, 8th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged on July 19, 1861 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He later in enlisted on August 11, 1862 as a Corporal in Company C, 124th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.

He participated in the Battle of Antietam during which, unbeknown to him, he was deathly ill with typhoid fever. Following the battle, he initially was sent to the field hospital; then to the Regimental hospital at Harper’s Ferry; then home; then to the closest military hospital, which was in Wilmington, Delaware; then to a convalescent camp at Acquia Creek, Virginia; and, finally, back to his unit for discharge. Although he surely almost died from typhoid fever, which many soldiers did, his illness may have saved his life in the long run since missed the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was discharged on May 17, 1863 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Allen McLane died on December 23, 1910. He is buried at the United Methodist Church Cemetery in Cherry Hill, Maryland.
