Department of New York
Headquarters of The Department Commander

Dear New York Department Brothers:

As one of the final duties in my current term as Department Commander, I offer you
these details on our upcoming New York Department Encampment. This promises to be
a truly magnificent event that we will all remember for a very long time. Join us and
become a part of SUVCW history!

To help our Department make the most of this Encampment, I offer the following
Department Orders #4 to all Brothers:

Department Orders #4
April 1, 2001

  1. Most Camps have done very well at improving the timeliness and accuracy of their Quarterly Reports.
For those that have not, please be advised that Camps that do not submit their reports and per capita taxes
in time for our Department Secretary and Treasurer to report such to the National Order, will be listed as
"Not In Good Standing." Such Camps may be suspended by the Department Commander and, in accordance
with our Constitution and Regulations, will have their Charters revoked by our Commander-in-Chief after four
such quarters. At the request of Department Secretary Rave, our Department Books will be closed on the last
day of May. Any Camps not in "Good Standing" at the time will not be eligible to seat voting members at the
    Department Encampment.

  2. Our Department Patriotic Instructor Dale Theetge has distributed an application form and a list of requirements
for the Department Patriotic Instructor’s Award to all Camps. It is hoped that all Camps will satisfy these
requirements and will submit their applications. As announced, the deadline for applications is May 9th.

  3. A beautiful Memorial Service at West Point will be held during the Encampment. As each Camp is already
required to submit the names of deceased members to our Department Chaplain, each Camp Commander
and Chaplain is encouraged to make certain that all such notifications have been made so that your departed
comrades can be properly remembered at this ceremony.

  4. Please do all you can to solicit donations for our annual Department fund raiser using the donation tickets
provided with this issue. Request more if needed!

  5. Send your submissions to appear in our Encampment Journal soon. Use the form on page 3 to remember an
honored ancestor, praise your Camp Commander, or send a tribute to the Department and the work we do!

  6. Since 1995, our Confederate cousins in New York’s General Archibald Gracie Camp #985 have offered an
award to the Department of New York Camp that best demonstrates their support for all of us to honor our
ancestors, north and south, through such actions as locating and marking the graves of Confederate veterans in
New York State and holding joint meetings or activities with the SCV. A copy of the requirements and application
for this award are being sent to all Camp Commanders for their consideration and action.

  7. Pre-registering for the Department Encampment will be most helpful in preparing for the event. Advance
registration for the banquet by June 4th and for the tour of West Point prior to the Encampment is essential!
Get your Journal submissions in soon and make your hotel reservations without delay. I’ll see you in Newburgh!

Submitted in F, C, and L,

Michael S. Bennett

Commander, Department of New York
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
