Department of New York
Headquarters of The Department Commander
Dear New York Department Brothers:
It remains my great honor to serve my Brothers in New York as
Department Commander.
I humbly offer the following Department Orders #3 as we continue to carry on the
important
work of our forefathers to ensure that our Union veterans, and all veterans,
are never
forgotten, and that the great spirit of patriotism which carried them from the
farmers field
to the battlefield will always live on.
Department Orders #3
January 1, 2001
Department Orders #2 were included in the Summer 2000 issue of The Volunteer,
and are also posted on our Department website at: www.suvcw.org/ny/deptny.htm.
As it has been thoroughly described in Department Orders #1 and #2, it will be
offered only as a reminder
that Camps are to report the death of any members to the Department
Secretary, the Dept. Chaplain,
and the Editors of both The Banner and The Volunteer.
Also as previously outlined, our new emphasis on the Department Eagle Scout
Recognition Program
is well underway and all of the Boy Scout Councils within New York State have been
provided with the
contact information for the SUVCW Camp nearest their headquarters, and
its Eagle Scout Coordinator.
It is hoped that many requests for Eagle Scout Certificates will be forthcoming and
that our Camps can
reap the benefits of this outstanding public relations opportunity while honoring these
deserving young men.
Our Department Patriotic Instructor, Dale Theetge, has
provided an application for the new
New York Department Patriotic Instructors Award, to all our Camps.
This award was created
as a result of a vote by the 1999 Department Encampment and I commend Brother
Theetge for his
work in outlining the criteria for this award, the application process, as well as for
designing the awards
themselves. I hope that all Camps will meet the requirements and will
apply, in a timely manner,
to receive the award at our June Encampment.
Department Historian/Archivist Richard Dobson will be contacting
all Camps in an effort to create a list
of all Camp-owned property within the Department of New York.
We are all aware of the tragic loss of
our Camp and Department treasures through theft or
carelessness. Brother Dobsons new archival list will
assist Camps, and the Department, in locating and
keeping track of such items (Charters, records, etc.)
before they find their way into garage sales or antique shops. Of course, this list
applies only to Camp-owned
items, not the personal property of Camp members.
There has been a small improvement in the timeliness of Quarterly Report
submissions to our Dept. Secretary
and Treasurer. A few Camps, however, still could do a little
better. The deadlines for the quarterly reports
remain the same from one year to the next, and Dept. Secretary Rave has the blank
forms in the hands of
Camp Secretaries with plenty of time to get them completed accurately
and returned by the deadline.
Camps not currently "in good standing" with regard to their
reports and per capita payments face suspension,
as well as the inability to seat members at the June Department Encampment.
Reports and payments WILL NOT be accepted at the Encampment.
Lastly, just a reminder that our 2001 Encampment will take place
in the heart of the historic and scenic
Hudson Valley Region. In conjunction with our Encampment, Delegates and their
guests will have the
opportunity to tour West Point, which will be the site of our memorial service, and
visit the Military Museum.
The room rate is just $73 + tax per room, per night. Room reservations may be made
directly with the
Holiday Inn - Newburgh at (845) 564-9020. Our rates are listed under Allied Orders.
If you are not quoted the special rate of $73 per night, please notify me!
Submitted in F, C, and L,
