Department of New York
Headquarters of The Department Commander
Dear New York Department Brothers:
With repeated appreciation for the trust bestowed upon me in
allowing me the great
honor of serving as Commander of the Department of New York, I humbly offer
these
Department Orders #2 as we rededicate ourselves to working together
to further honor
our forefathers who fought to preserve the Union, and to uphold the great traditions of
our Order. And as is apparent, there is much to do. Through the Department of New York,
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the work of the G.A.R. goes on:
Department Orders #2
September 1, 2000
Department Orders #1 were mailed to all Department of New York Brothers in
July/August of this year, and
were also posted on our Department website at: www.suvcw.org/ny/deptny.htm.
If anyone should require a
copy, feel free to contact me at: Michael S. Bennett PO Box 1824 White Plains, NY 10602 or
via e-mail at:

As per our Department By-Laws, the 2001 Department Encampment dates
and location were selected and announced by September 1st of this year. It is
my sincerest hope that all New York Brothers will endeavor to participate in our 118th
Department Encampment at the Holiday Inn - West Point / Newburgh on June 9-10, 2001.
Our Sisters in the other New York Allied Orders; the Auxiliary to the Sons of
Union Veterans of the Civil War, the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War,
and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, have been invited to join us and
hold their annual programs in conjunction with ours should the dates, location, and other
itinerary meet with their approval. Additional information on the SUVCWs Encampment,
will be available in future issues of The
Volunteer, through General Orders, and on the Department
website. The room rate will be just $73 + tax per room, per evening, and reservations may
be made directly with the Holiday Inn at (845) 564-9020. Our special rates are listed with
the hotel under the heading of: Allied Orders.
Department Orders #1 directed all Camps to provide me with contact
information for their appointed
Camp Eagle Scout Coordinator. All Camps have not yet complied. Please do so
at your earliest convenience
so that we may begin to increase our utilization of this exceptional public relations
tool.
Also in Department Orders #1, Camps were instructed to report all deaths
to the following sources:
a. To our Department Chaplain
b. To our Department Secretary
c. To our Department Signals
Officer
It was recently brought to my attention that a fourth entity should also
receive this information. The editor of our National newsletter would like to print
notices of our members passing as well. Therefore, Camp Secretaries and/or Chaplains
should please include The Banner on all death notices:Editor,

In the listing of Officers which was circulated along with Department
Orders #1,
Senior Vice Commander Todd A. Shillingtons zipcode is incorrectly listed.
Please update your records for this to read 14470.
Our Department Officers, specifically our Secretary and Treasurer,
are having a difficult time with the receipt of quarterly reports and per capita payments
from our Camps. It was almost the case that several of our Brothers may have been
prevented from being seated at the National Encampment because their Camps
reports and payments had not been made on time, thereby making them not in good
standing. While our Department Encampment voted against implementing penalties
for submitting delinquent reports, I will be the first one in line to make the motion that
this be done at our 2001 Encampment if the current situation does not improve. I
will do all that I can to ensure that the forms are sent out in a timely manner, and that
the return date is clearly marked. On the Camp level, please do all that you can to
ensure that they are completed and returned with payment by the date required.
Submitted in F, C, and L,
Michael S. Bennett
Commander, Department of New York
