Commander Bennett joined the SUVCW in 1995, claiming his right to hereditary membership to his Great-Great-Great Grandfather John Richmond, who served as a Private in the 128th NYVI, Co. B. He is also the descendant of Pvt. John Anderson of Co. A, 56th NYVI. As it was the nearest Camp to him, Michael joined the Capt. Oliver Tilden Camp 26 in New York City. He accepted the position of Department Signals Officer in 1998, producing the New York Department's newsletter, The Volunteer, and creating the Department's first website.

In 1998, he co-organized the Col. Augustus van Horne Ellis Camp 124 in Goshen, NY - halfway between the Tilden Camp in New York City, and the Col. George Willard Camp 154 in Albany. He served as that Camp's first Commander, and then as the Camp's Secretary/Treasurer.

In 2001, in order to assist  Schuyler Smith Camp 193 in Halsey Valley, and to help preserve the Halsey Valley G.A.R. Hall, he joined that Camp as well and served as an officer - helping to have the G.A.R. Hall placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Also in 2001, while still Department Commander, Michael organized the Admiral John L. Worden Camp 150 in Peekskill, and served as that Camp's first Commander.

In 2007, he organized the Daniel E. Sickles Camp 3, headquartered in White Plains, NY.

Michael would later serve the New York Department and the National Order in a variety of capacities, including as New York Department Secretary/Treasurer for many years, and as National Secretary from 2004-2007.

Michael has served for more than 20 years as Scoutmaster of White Plains Boy Scout Troop 73, is a 3rd Degree Mason and was a Trustee of the White Plains Historical Society. He is currently President and General Manager of both Richmond Legal Video, Inc. and Anderson Court Reporting & Litigation Support, Inc., providing litigation support services in the New York metropolitan area. When time permits, hobbies include SCUBA diving, caving, and visiting historic sites. His varied careers have included that of radio broadcaster, television producer, and theatrical director. Michael lives in White Plains, NY with his wife Gail and their son Jonathan Scott Bennett.
