In 1921, Dr. Lewis S. Pilcher, Department Commander from New York, became the 53rd man to become Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. He died at his home in New York City on December 24, 1934. For more than 50 years he practiced medicine. He was president of the County and State Medical Associations, Vice-President of the Pan American Association of Surgeons, a member of many literary and scientific societies, and for 40 years was editor of a medical and surgical journal.
