John W. Hays was born May 26, 1844 at New Scotland, Albany County, N.Y. He enlisted May 4, 1861, at Syracuse, NY in Co. H, 14th NY Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged May 23, 1863, at Utica, NY on account of expiration of service and re-enlisted at Albany, NY, September 14, 1864, to serve one year in Co. L, 11th N.Y. Cavalry (better known as Scotts 900). He was discharged June 12, 1865, at Memphis, Tenn, by reason of General Order no. 83, War Department, dated May 8, 1865. Comrade

John W. Hayes "passed on" September 29, 1945 at Brookview, NY, at the age of 101 years. He had served as Sr. and Jr. Vice Department Commander and in other Department offices in past years. He was Commander of Lew Benedict Post No. 5, Albany, NY and died while in office. Source: |
