Comrade Daniels enlisted, in August 1861, in Co. A, 16th NY Infantry, and remained in that command until July 1862, when as Captain, he was assigned to duty as Quartermaster on the Staff of General Emory Upton. He was later promoted to Major, continuing in the Quartermaster's Department, and had charge of General Sheridan's supply train in the famous Shenandoah campaign.

He resigned in August 1866, after five years' active service, refusing a Major's commission in the Regular Army. He joined the G.A.R. in 1867 and for thirteen years was Commander of Ransom Post No. 354, of Ogdensburg. He was President of the St. Lawrence County Veterans' Association for five years, and in 1908 he was unanimously elected Department Commander of New York, and continued active in the interests of the G.A.R. until the end.
