Comrade Cooley was only Department Commander for 16 days when he died on October 15, 1945 at the age of 98. His friend, and Dept. Commander John W. Hayes had died on September 29, 1945, at age 101. In past years he served as Dept. Assistant Adj. and Quartermaster General. He was the last member of Lew Benedict Post No. 5 in Albany. He was born January 22, 1847. He volunteered in service July 19, 1864 and was with Co. H, 8th Mass. Inf., under Col. Benjamin F. Peach. He served 114 days and was discharged November 10, 1864. Source: Journal of the 1946 NY Dept.
