Died on 14 October 1874 of influenza, after serving in the 9th NY at Antietam and Fredericksburg.  Prior to those battles, he was wounded at the Battle of South Mills (Camden), NC in April of 1862.

This is not Pvt. Paul's grave.  It is a monument erected in his church's cemetery.  The inscription reads,

Philo Paul
of Co. D. 140 P.V.
Killed at
Spottsylvania
May 12th 1864.
Aged 40 yrs.
Buried on the field
with his comrade
Amos Swart.

It is thought that he rests among the Unknowns in Fredericksburg National Cemetery.
