Civil War Medal of Honor Remembrance Service
The members of Antietam Camp #3, SUVCW invites you, your friends and family to join us in the following event. Please distribute this information as wide as you can.
On March 24, 2012, Antietam Camp #3, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil war will sponsor a Civil War Medal of Honor Remembrance Service. It will commence at 10:00 AM at the Quinn Chapel A. M. E. Church at 106 East 3rd Street, Frederick, Maryland. This A. M. E. Church was used as a hospital servicing the wounded from the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam.
The service will honor and remember 1st Sergeant Decatur Dorsey. Slave-born in Howard County, Maryland, he enlisted into Company B, of the 39th U. S. Colored Infantry. The basis for his award of the Medal of Honor centered on his service at the “Battle of the Crater” during the Petersburg, VA Campaign in Southern Virginia. He was so recognized “for extraordinary heroism on 30 July, 1964 while serving with Company B, 39th SCT.” “Sergeant Dorsey planted his colors on the Confederate works in advance of his regiment, and when the regiment was driven back to the Union works he carried the colors there and bravely rallied the men.”
The “Battle of the Crater” at Petersburg was the first opportunity for the USCT to engage in battle by reinforcing the initial attack. He was discharged from service on December 4, 1865 in Wilmington, NC. He is buried in Flower Hill Cemetery, Hoboken, NJ where he had resided until his death on July 11, 1891.
Antietam Camp #3, Department of the Chesapeake, invites reenactors and living history enthusiasts also and uniformed members will be invited to participate in the proceedings. The event will include:
- A short worship service
- A procession from the church to Memorial Park
- A memorial event including honors and taps
There will also be a “off the menu” repast afterwards at Brewer’s Alley Restaurant in the 2nd Floor Assembly Room.

MOLLUS
NOW FORMING
An attempt to reactivate the West Virginia Commandery of MOLLUS is being undertaken. If you are a lineal or collateral descendant of a Union Commissioned Officer and reside in
Brothers - If you haven't already heard, our camp has produced an ornament and is selling them in order to raise money for a monument that we would like to erect in Luray, Va. to honor the men - blue and gray - who held a reunion there in July 1881 and later in Carlisle, Pa. in Sept. 1881. In many ways, we feel that the effort of soldiers in years after the war, in reunions such as these, fulfilled an important part of President Lincoln's vision for the country in years after the war - reunified in peace. If we can raise enough money, we would also like to place a state historic marker at Carlisle, Pa. for the reunions. For details about the ornament and the challenge we have made to the respective departments, please see: http://www.geocities.com/bluegrayvirginians/SUVCWFundraisingChallenge.html Thanks in advance for your orders!
